When was the last time you swiped a credit card at a restaurant or retail store? A few nights ago? This morning, even?

Chances are you’ve encountered one or more POS (point-of-sale) software systems today. POS is the software that powers credit card readers and, as far as software goes, it’s ubiquitous. We have over 250 options listed in our POS software directory alone. For retailers looking for new software, the market can be daunting, but Capterra is here to help.

We’ve ranked the Top 20 options by popularity in our new Top 20 Most Popular POS Software infographic. We designed this research with the buyer in mind, and the ranking is meant to show the biggest players in the space. This listing is not all-inclusive, and should not replace your own research. The most popular solutions are not always the best fit for your needs.

There are also many industry-specific POS options out there (for example, restaurant POS) that we did not include here. For this infographic, we are focusing primarily on retail POS options.

Take a look at our methodology below, and refer to this blog post about our Top 20 series for more information on our process.

Research

This research relies on our unique Popularity Index. The index has been used throughout our series of Top 20 infographics, and produces a weighted and ranked score based on:

  1. Number of current customers
  2. Number of active users
  3. Social media presence
    • Facebook likes, Twitter followers, LinkedIn followers, Google +1s, Klout scores, and number of Capterra reviews

In this infographic, “customers” refers to the number of retailers with a license to the software. “Users” refers to the number of store employees that have access to the software. Each of these metrics make up 40% of the final score, and the social component makes up the remaining 20% (each of the six metrics accounts for 3.33%).

Data

In most cases, we gather the customer and user numbers directly from the vendors. If a vendor is unable to provide some of the information we need, we develop our own estimates based on our industry averages and publicly available data (highlighted below). To be clear, all numbers in this table should be read as estimates.

Combined, however, we believe these estimates provide an accurate reflection of the market, and are the best estimates publicly available to date.
